Priority Hire in construction gives priority to those who live in distressed zip codes. I’m working with labor to see how we can expand the definition to include those at risk of displacement like those in the CD and those who recently returned from a distressed zip code so they can remain in the neighborhood they once (and again) called home.
In the campaign, I celebrated efforts like those from Africatown-Central District to bring back black folks to the CD but such efforts need to be paired with expanded opportunity. Priority Hire is one way to do that but we need to expand the definition in order to make it work. ...
Priority Hire - City Purchasing and Contracting | seattle.gov
In 2015, the City created a priority hire program for City public works construction projects of $5 million or more and, in 2017, expanded the program to public/private partnership projects with significant City investment. Using City-funded and public/private partnership projects, the Priority Hire...Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Linked InShare by Email

More Seattleites are housing homeless people in their backyards, but it’s hard to find the right fit
It's been two years since Seattleites started putting homeless people up in tiny houses in their backyards, and only nine homes have been built. Here's how it works.Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Linked InShare by Email

It was a great experience joining @facinghomelessness for one of their weekly encampment clean ups this morning. Walking through the encampment, I was reminded of the traumatizing nature of no-notice sweeps. We must ensure that policies addressing the homelessness crisis are trauma-informed and centered around the communities most impacted by the crisis.
Please check out this amazing group! They are doing great work to drive compassionate conversation around the homelessness crisis. ...

Thank you to my friend and former opponent, @loganforseattle, for your endorsement. We need a reliable transportation network that serves the entire city. There isn't a once size fits all solution, that's why I support expanding bus service, Light Rail, bike lanes, and improving sidewalks. Please remember to postmark your ballots by Tuesday, November 5. ...

Accountability matters. I will be accountable to small business owners like Moises. It is hard enough to run a small business in one of Seattle’s most expensive neighborhoods, but it is even harder when your Councilmember is absent. I will show up, listen, and be accountable to people like Moises and all the people who live in District 3. #eganforseattle ...

Seattle’s small businesses deserve an advocate who knows firsthand the challenges small business owners face in Seattle. I have started two small businesses, so I understand. We don’t want a city filled with chain stores, we want a city where small businesses thrive. If elected, I will work closely with small businesses to ensure the city is doing everything we can to help entrepreneurs succeed. #Seattle #2019elections ...

Happy Indigenous People’s Day! Today, and every day, we recognize that Seattle occupies land where the Suquamish and Duwamish people have resided since time immemorial. We celebrate their personal and cultural resilience in the face of centuries of injustice perpetrated by the US government and stand together to demand federal recognition for the Duwamish people. #IndigenousPeoplesDay ...

When I came out 30 years ago, it was the midst of the AIDS crisis. Gay people like me were sometimes hated and almost always misunderstood and cast aside. Coming to Capitol Hill then, I found a place of refuge. There was safety in numbers. By coming out, I found a pathway to thriving, loving, a living a more authentic life, and I did it right here in District 3. For this, I owe a debt of gratitude and am repaying that debt by actively working to create a welcoming city for all who live here and for those yet to arrive here.
To those who haven’t come out, who want to be out, who can’t come out, who never got to come out, who are figuring it out — I see you, I love you, you’re beautiful, and I will always stand with you. #NationalComingOutDay ...

It was great meeting Jonathan, Lauren, and their dog Naomi while knocking doors near Miller Park! They really like that their neighborhood is becoming more dense by increased density in their single family zone. They have more neighbors in duplexes, DADUs, and with multiple roommates living in big houses. They love having new neighbors having access to affordable housing to achieve a vibrant mix of people in their neighborhood.
If elected to Seattle City Council, I will amend the Backyard Cottage Legislation to create separate tracks for short-term and long-term rentals so that the law is actually creating more long-term housing and not just more income for the wealthy with short-term rentals. We also need to make sure our homeowners most vulnerable to displacement can borrow against the value of their house, guaranteed by the city, so that they can create units for long-term rental and to keep vulnerable families from being displaced. #seattle #eganforseattle ...

So great to meet Melanie and her twin boys Collin and Will while doorbelling my neighborhood last night. She is worried too many families are being priced out of Seattle and of course is focused on education and climate change because of her three kids. We have to do much more on all three of these issues. Check out my website at www.eganforseattle.org to find out my plan. ...

Had a great time canvassing in the Central District today! While walking down the street I met Ray and Tara, and their boys Michael and Calvin. As young parents they’re concerned about the poor sidewalk infrastructure in their neighborhood. Tara’s mom recently hurt herself as a result of it and their oldest son Calvin is scared of big bumps when in his stroller.
While we have many big issues that we need to tackle as a city, hyperlocal issues such as this one should not be going by the wayside. Poor street infrastructure is not just a safety issue but one of accessibility. Everyone should be able to travel around our city safely! ...
